As the members of the Twin Pines College football team find their mates, they gain the ability to shift into grizzly bears and become part of a larger group and consciousness (called a "sloth"). There's a purpose for this, though they don't understand what that is yet. The individual books are focused more on erotica than plot, but the plot that's there is quite interesting.

And that's where the problem is. The twist on shifters is very interesting, and the implications of a higher purpose being achieved is compelling. The writing style is clear and engaging, and the characters are well developed and believable. All of this makes one wish there was more emphasis on story-telling and less emphasis on erotica. Each book to date has dealt with a particular sexual "kink", and here the kink is an act called "edging" (bringing your partner to the edge of orgasm, then holding him there for extended lengths of time). It's actually interesting and nice that the author devotes each book to a particular kink, but the story does feel a bit imbalanced as the sex overshadows truly interesting plot elements. The writer does engage the reader wtih interesting suspenseful plot, and I wish there was more of it.

Where this book is dropped to a rating of three stars is that it is in drastic need of editing. There are severe formatting errors within the book, and the story keeps changing type size and fonts. It's distracting to be reading along, and suddenly finding that the font size has shifted to a small typeface that's difficult to read, or to a different typeface altogether. I don't know if it exists like that in the printed books, or if other kindles display the text better, but on my Kindle 3, the shifting of typefaces and typesizes is very distracting.
