Everyone needs a friend like Sylvie--funny, straightforward, and a little too often "right." Yet no matter how many wrong choices you make, she's always there for you.
In Sailing an Alien Sea, Cindy Gold's wit, humor, and oh-so- logical view of life emanate through her characters. You will recognize shades of yourself or people you know as Sylvie takes you on her journey growing up in Santa Fe. Her sister Emily, best friend Nola, and forever crush Orlando all come to life, getting into and helping each other out of trouble. By the end I felt like I was part of their circle and as I finished the last few pages, I found myself missing them and wanting to know how the rest of their lives turn out. Perhaps Ms. Gold will delight us with a follow up!
As a non-Santa Fean, I also thoroughly enjoyed the glossary and photos on the Sailing an Alien Sea website. It has a creatively captioned pictorial of Santa Fe's people, places, and things.
Everyone should be lucky enough to have a friend like Sylvie. Then again, everyone should live happily ever after and win the lottery. But that's not how life works and Sylvie knows it. This is a book about Sylvie and her friends. This is a book about life. The backdrop is Santa Fe in particular and the "Land of Enchantment" in general. The irony of this is not lost on Sylvie. What good is life if you can't enjoy some irony now and then? Read this book and enjoy "The World According to Sylvie." Don't forget to pick up a howling coyote with neckerchief (if of modest means) or a squash blossom necklace (if you are visiting from California) before you leave. By the way, I really did see the "Nice Indians Two Miles ahead" sign in New Mexico. The next sign I saw, after passing the Indians, was "Nice Indians Behind You." Enchanting....
I read this book a few months ago and have spent the time since then trying to decide how to review it. The problem is not in the quality, because I loved the book itself. My issue has been trying to figure out how to review a book that is such a complete work that it's nearly impossible to discuss without either spoiling it, or failing to do it justice. The writing is superb, and very respectful of the reader. Nowhere in these pages will you get the feeling that something has been dumbed down or explained in the ground for your benefit. It's funny and suspenseful, but is effortless in both respects. You get to know these characters and their surroundings intimately and find yourself feeling what they feel, for better or worse. I suppose the best thing to be said for this book is that it kept me up late reading on several occasions and genuinely shocked me at the end in the best possible way. It twists and turns leaving the reader with only one option; to enjoy the ride. This is truly topnotch storytelling with an ending that won't soon be forgotten.
I really liked Sailing an Alien Sea. It was a pretty quick read, like a couple days, and was a definite page-turner for me. I was also watching a lot of Breaking Bad at the time and I really started to feel like I was in Albuquerque. The narrator talks about how she can't stand all the fake-looking southwestern decor and we were watching the same thing in Breaking Bad when they go to a restaurant and try to frame their brother-in-law for drugs. Ha. Anyway, I enjoyed the character development and would definitely recommend this to a friend.
Wow! What a great and interesting book! Extremely funny and engaging parts of this story. In this accomplished writing performance, Cindy Gold establishes the clear central idea that friendship and camaraderie is a life treasure. The beginning of the book starts off with a narrative element to initially engage the reader and establish focus on the topic. The books main character, Sylvie, is quite the honest and extremely blunt girl growing up in Santa Fe's charismatic city. Her older eye catching friend Nola has her own way to working things out with her own brand of brashness, spunk and intelligence. Over time during the 1960's and 1970's the books characters create an engaging progression of life lessons that are logical and controlled as the author skillfully explains in vivid detail how they wrangle their common Santa Fiends, boyfriends, and their commonality of finding the truth and communicating it amongst themselves, hilarious at times. The precise, evocative language and specific details used to describe the sensations of being a girl who does not act as expected in Santa Fe during those years strengthen the story and reflect a keen awareness of the power of listening to ones own gut and standing up against bullies. The overall strength of conventions of being different (in the City Different) further contributes to the effectiveness of this well-crafted story. Santa Fean's and pleasure seekers alike will enjoy this book and I hope you do to as much as I did.
