Synopsis
When I started to write this book, I thought, How in the world can I write a story that traces on both sides my Pre-Revolutionary War roots, touches on Missouri history (Mormon wars, Bushwhackers, Frank and Jesse James), tells the tale of Grandpa Tarwarter, who helped fight Chief Crazy Horse, or Grandpa Doak, a Methodist minister, who performed drive-up buggy wedding ceremonies? How best can I recount the struggles and resilience of my parents, raising seven children on small Midwestern farms throughout the Great Depression, severe drought, pestilence and disease, only to send five of them off to fight two wars? How can I weave all of this together to include my story, a seeker who did not want to stay in the life to which I was born?
And why do I feel so compelled to record this history? Because those small Midwestern farms are mostly gone now. Where there were once fifteen or so farmsteads, there is now only one. Children cannot be raised in the free-range style we were, swimming and fishing in creeks and rivers that are now polluted. I have been a storyteller most of my life, whether anyone wanted to listen or not, and I want our time remembered, long after I’m gone.
I believe I have done the best I could to portray this once-upon-a-time life, consulting various sources, talking to my remaining brothers and my cousin Barbara, but sometimes I have run into a blank wall. And there’s no one left to ask.

This is an excellent read. The words "The American Dream" and "The Greatest Generation" were not mentioned in it, but that is what the book is about. It is about tightly woven families that supported each other, even in helping each other get an education. It is about a family that became known across the world for their champion Southdown sheep. This is such a lovely book. The author, Dottie Doak Thompson, really brought to life for me the time frame my family lived in the Honey Creek area of rural Missouri. Her writings inspired me to peel back the layers of family history to find Dottie and I are 3rd cousins 1x removed - it's so wonderful to find a new relative. One side note - Dottie's grandfather sold my great-grandfather the family Bible in 1882. My great-grandfather noted it on the inside front cover of the Bible. Even if Dottie is not related to you, her book takes you back to a much simpler life style which has been lost forever. Thanks Dottie for preserving Honey Creek history.
What a treasure this book is. This book has the ring-- and sometimes sting-- of truth about farm life in a recently bygone era. The facts are all available in history books, but the flavor can only be appreciated from the personal stories, memories, and perspectives of one who survived, and thrived, through difficult times. As an added bonus, the author included some stories written by other family members, a WWII vet brother and a spunky homesteading aunt. This family has some serious writing chops! Is there a lesson here? Listen carefully to your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles when they describe their coming-of-age experiences, and even jot a few notes. Pretty soon, you may find yourself with "No One Left to Ask." Just as importantly, tell your own story, using your own words, as this author does so honestly and brilliantly.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Dottie Doak Thompson is a very talented writer and her life story is fascinating. My husband's ancestors were Tarwaters which drew me to this book in the first place although her line didn't follow my husbands.
Wonderful history of this family...so well written. Great documentation of a period in time in these small Missouri towns. Fascinating to read her brother's experiences during the wars.
No One Left To Ask is the kind of read a person can enjoy time and again. I just took that journey, and the second reading proved to be as rich an experience as the first, with new discoveries both poignant and profound along the way. I lost my mother recently, and with her passing I lost the link to my own family history. This firsthand account of a young girl growing up in rural America brings a sense of family home to me and warms my heart. As one of the previous reviewers so eloquently wrote, Dottie Doak Thompson is a born storyteller.
Anyone who grew up on a farm near a small Missouri town in the mid-Twentieth Century would certainly enjoy this...especially if you were the only girl near the end of a number of brothers. The family dynamics, coupled with a few odd-ball neighbors, would seem very familiar. It is a success story that shows that any circumstances can be changed, hopefully for the better. I found particularly touching the author's mother's life. It does make you want to write a memoir of your own...
NO ONE LEFT TO ASK is a wonderful, from-the-heart account of Ms. Thompson's upbringing in rural Missouri during lean times. It's fun to go back and read how "country folk" lived, their remedies, ways of making do, and how in the midst of hard times, you can have a happy childhood. It's the type of book you read a little, come back later, read a little more -- in other words, it's not like a novel per se. A great read.
